12 Strong tells the story of the first Special Forces team deployed to Afghanistan after 9/11; under the leadership of a new captain, the team must work with an Afghan warlord to take down the Taliban.
I'm a veteran of both the Marine Corps and the Air Force. And, although I never saw any real combat, I was definitely placed in harm's way more than once. Part of that was in Mogadishu, shortly after the Blackhawk Down incident. So, when I watcnh a military action movie, it has to pass a pretty high test of realism before I am able to suspend disbelief and lose myself in the story line.
This film is not perfect, but I really enjoyed it. It did a great job of sucking me in and painting a picture of what happened in the early days of the war against the Taliban and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. I felt like the military realism was accurate (at least as far as I could tell) and I did not find myself being distracted by a bunch of inaccuracies, which is usually the case.
The visuals in this movie were awesome. I've tried my hand at filmmaking a time or two and it's hard enough trying to shoot something on the streets of your local town. To string together two hours of action-packed combat as powerful as this movie did is truly inspiring. The story was pretty tight, which is not surprising, as it was based on a best-selling book.
There were a number of entertaining performances in this film, but it really comes down to two: Chris Hemsworth in the lead role of Army Captain Mitch Nelson and Navid Negahban as General Dostum, leader of one of the Afghani Northern Alliance factions. The chemistry between these two actors was palpable and helped take this movie from average to almost great.
If you like military action thrillers, then I definitely recommend you see this movie. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
