Synopsis

Epic adventure Exodus: Gods and Kings is the story of one man’s daring courage to take on the might of an empire. Using state of the art visual effects and 3D immersion, Scott brings new life to the story of the defiant leader Moses as he rises up against the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses, setting 600,000 slaves on a monumental journey of escape from Egypt and its terrifying cycle of deadly plagues.

MovieGuy Review

Ridley Scott managed to do what do what the MPAA could not…almost entirely remove God from the story of Moses and the Hebrew exodus from Egypt. I’m not entirely sure what he was trying to accomplish, but of this I am sure: This is not the story as told in the Old Testament.

I am not a Biblical scholar by any means, but I have read the entire Old Testament and it is clear to me that Ridley Scott’s interpretation of the events that transpired in the books of Exodus did not include the miracles or the God that many of us have grown to know and love. It seemed to me that this movie, in part, was an attempt to explain how some (or all) of the miracles described in Exodus could have occurred within the commonly accepted laws of nature and science. Forgive me for being so bold, but doesn’t that completely defeat the basic requirements of faith: believing in something that cannot be seen nor easily explained??

In any case, beside the fact that this story seems to be out of sync with the commonly accepted version(s) of the story of Moses, the movie doesn’t really stand on its own. The pacing was erratic, the story seemed choppy and most of the performances were mediocre…at best. Christian Bale does portray a pretty decent interpretation of Moses, but it’s not enough to overcome the other weaknesses in this cinematic disappointment.

I would NOT recommend seeing this film. It doesn’t even seem to have any educational value, due to the drastic inaccuracies in the story. I hope you will take my recommendation and NOT waste two hours of your life, as I did. I will never get them back.
